10. Understanding Your Context and Maintenance Mode Shame (ft. Jordan Robertson, LMFT-S)

This week Jazmin was reminded that she needs to update her end-of-counseling-workday-ritual now that she’s shifted to working fully virtually from home. Sharing is caring except when it comes to counseling work stuff!

Today we’re talking with Jordan Robertson. She is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Supervisor in Texas and a Certified Gottman Therapist. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana and a Master of Arts in Professional Counseling - with an emphasis in Marital, Couples, and Family Counseling from Texas State University - San Marcos.

Jordan currently works in private practice where she specializes in relationship health and recovery, gender identity and transition, and works a lot with the LGBTQ+ population and non-monogamous couples. With Jordan we discuss what it has been like for her to get training and experience working with different underserved populations, particularly in a geographic area that has scant resources.

Jordan talks about her experience becoming a supervisor and the challenges in finding supervisees that are a good fit with her. With Jordan we explore the tension in our profession between “hustle culture” and ideals of extreme altruism, and what it feels like sometimes to simply be in maintenance mode. We also get into some things that are very specific to relationships and couples work since both Jordan and Karen could talk about that all day, but Jazmin stops us and we move on to other, fascinating aspects of Jordan’s journey and varied interests. We hope you love our conversation with Jordan as much as we do!
